Cozy Up to a Sustainable Social Media Strategy

So I know that we talk a lot about social media, but those posts and blogs often focus on one mastering one small aspect of the topic. Today, we’re going to talk about the big picture of social media strategy, and how it doesn’t have to be a big pain in the butt. 

Just like anything that needs to happen regularly, before a task becomes a habit, it can feel like a bit of a chore. Consider picking out your outfit for the following day; you must make a few choices, then preview how your choices will look together, then place your chosen outfit somewhere. When you wake up the next day, you’ll dress yourself in the clothing and be ready for your day. It seems like a lot of steps, but once they become a routine, you might wonder how you ever functioned without it. Developing a sustainable social media strategy can be similar if you think of it as a new and attainable habit, rather than a stressful thing that you sometimes do (and probably wish you did better).

Stop Making Excuses

Honestly, this should be the first step of every to-do list.  After all, the biggest thing holding us back is usually our own brain giving us reasons to delay. Time to shut that brain up and do it anyway. If you’re doing business, marketing your own services, or building a brand online, then you need to participate in at least a few social media platforms. Ideally Instagram and Facebook. Create your Facebook business page, and connect your Instagram handle. Give yourself a pat on the back, because your first step is complete.

Accumulate Some Content

This part seems like the scariest part to so many of us, and if you’re trying to do it from scratch every day, then yeah, that is pretty scary! Instead of choosing to take a daily photo, edit the photo, and somehow still have time to post correctly on your social media outlets, dedicate some time to taking several photos instead. Now that you have a folder of edited photos to work with, you can start to craft your captions. Remember that just because your photo is of a butterfly doesn’t mean that your caption should be about butterflies. Captions on social media shouldn’t be used to describe the photo, they should be treated as an opportunity to talk about your brand, your projects, or topics that might be relevant to your followers. Think of the photo as a way to catch their eye, and the caption as a chance to get them interested in your brand culture. There’s always a way to tie the photo’s content to the caption; maybe that butterfly could represent your brand’s growth, transformation, or the freedom you feel now that you’re taking control of your social media strategy…

Create a Hashtag List

Just as captions don’t have to be all about the photo, hashtags really shouldn’t be either. Using the same example, if you hashtagged #butterfly, you might get a lot of butterfly lovers interacting with your post, but do they really give a darn about your business? Nope. When hashtags are applicable (Instagram mainly), they should be used in an effort to attract those who will be interested in your business as a whole, including your service offerings and products.

To find your best hashtags, conduct some hashtag research by searching some of your business keywords in the “tags” section of the Instagram app, and taking a look at the hashtags similar business accounts are targeting in their posts. As you find hashtags with good search volume and relevance to your brand, list them (complete with their accompanying # symbol) in the notes section of your phone. From there, you can copy and paste some of them whenever you post. With that said, you should try to target at least a few different hashtags with each new post. It’s a great way to attract a wide audience and promote more engagement with your posts.

Build an Editorial Calendar

An editorial calendar is just a fancy term for posting schedule, but it doesn’t have to look fancy. You can write down this social media posting calendar wherever you’re most likely to look, whether that’s your day planner, a dry-erase board, a notebook, or a spreadsheet on your computer. Why not challenge yourself to plan for one month, with 2 posts per week? It might sound ambitious, but once you have planned out your whole month of posts, including photos, captions, and hashtags for each, you’ll be surprised how much more convenient it feels to post! You might even feel ready to increase your posts to 3 or 4 the following month!

With so much time saved by planning ahead, you can commit an extra few minutes to engaging with followers and fans. It’s a win-win situation, and one that one that will ultimately help your brand reach its ideal clientele organically.
